Perkins Cove Candies

A Family Tradition Since 1980

In 1980 a sweet little shop opened its doors in a renovated turn-of-the-century fisherman's shack in Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Maine. The founders, Martin “Marty” Fitzgerald, and his wife, “Fabulous Fay” Fitzgerald wanted their chocolates and confections to be a collection families could enjoy. The goal was to offer treats that were affordable for everyone, especially so young children could shop and choose something from the penny candy bins of the day. During the summer season Fay ran the store full time and Marty commuted back and forth from his then career job. It took some years before he retired from the telecom industry so they could run their bustling candy shop together.

Tucked into a small cozy location in Perkins Cove, the shop then had a delightful though somewhat limited selection of confections, penny candy and taffy. Two of their children, sisters Amy and Erin worked in the family store and like the other summer staff they were called, “The Candy Girls.”

The Business Grew

Perkins Cove Candies Moves to the Heart of Perkins Cove

By 1986 Perkins Cove Candies had outgrown their first shop location so they purchased and renovated a home in The Cove allowing them to expand their confectionary offerings to meet their sweet-toothed customers’ demand. The next decade saw sister Amy and Erin immersing themselves in the family business with their parents and became an integral part of its growth. Though the young women pursued other business endeavors they always kept a hand in the thriving seasonal business.

In 1999, the sisters took over the business from their parents and 20-something years later they are still creating decadent new confections for Perkins Cove Candies regulars and first-time customers alike to crave. Today Amy (Fitzgerald) Forbes and her husband Matt Forbes along with Erin (Fitzgerald) Peters and her husband Ryan Peters work together to make the some of the most premier chocolates, fudge, and salt water taffy known on the seacoast of southern Maine.

The third generation of family is now also involved in the family business. Erin and Ryan’s son, Drew, is actively involved in day-today operations.

Three locations include Perkins Cove in Ogunquit and Wells and Wells Beach, Maine

From the cozy old fisherman’s shack in The Cove grew to three locations. Our Wells Beach shop opened in 1998. Our Candy Kitchen was open when we renovated the old Wells Beach post office in 2000. A decade later, in 2010, the Route 1 store in Wells was built to accommodate the growing demand for house-made confections, chocolates caramels and salt water taffy. New recipes over the years include Sea Salt Caramels, Sea Salt Potato Chip bark and our newest, Chunky Trail Bark, which have become popular customer favorites.
